How Does Cold Weather Impact the Exterior of Your Chimney?

A chimney should be sturdy enough to withstand all types of weather, but even brick is susceptible to the effects of cold weather. Harsh temperatures and weather elements such as snow, rain, high winds, sleet, and ice can lead to spalling—or cracking—resulting in a damaged exterior vulnerable to leaks. City Roofing has a wealth of experience when it comes to fixing any chimney damage due to cold weather.

What is Spalling?

Cold weather can negatively impact chimney masonry over time. Spalling occurs on exterior slabs when trapped water in the concrete freezes and thaws multiple times. When water freezes, it expands by about 9%,  creating pressure inside the slab. The expansion and contraction of the water creates destructive movement in the chimney. Over time, you will notice the makeup of the brick start to break, flake, and chip off. Piles of debris around the chimney or on the ground below are also evidence of spalling. Our experts at City Roofing will inspect your chimney and evaluate the best course of action for chimney masonry repairs.

Cracks Lead to Leaks

The most vulnerable area of your chimney is the brick-and-mortar joints, which undergo a lot of stress from excessive exposure to weather. When the joints get damaged and split, chimney leaks become a common problem. Every component of the chimney contributes in some way to protecting the masonry from moisture damage; however, those components are vulnerable to damage. For instance, the lifespan of mortar is typically around 25 years, while masonry has a lifespan of over 100 years.  Cold weather causes mortar to break down over time, but if that mortar is not properly replaced, moisture will eventually enter the chimney system and cause water spots in your home’s walls and ceiling, and potentially far worse damage.  If you experience spalling or breakage, please call City Roofing the moment you notice a leak.
